This summer, graduate students in the School for the Environment and University of Massachusetts Boston - McCormack School of Policy Studies worked with The Trust for Public Land Massachusetts and a neighborhood group, the West of Washington Coalition, to design and build a temporary butterfly garden in a vacant lot on Norwell Street, near Codman Square in Dorchester. As part of Jennifer Bender's Environmental Innovation Clinic class, students competed for IGERT funding in a Shark Tank-like pitch session, and the team of Courtney Humphries, Jack Whitacre, and Stephan Maranian won $15,000 to create the garden. Tomorrow, Courtney and Elaine Montes will be helping the neighborhood decorate the garden during its summer BBQ. #community #publicart
UMass Boston Honors College and special education master's students have an opportunity to engage with and practice on someone other than their peers before getting into an actual classroom. Kristin Murphy, an assistant professor of special education in the UMass Boston College of Education and Human Development, has collaborated with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and mixed reality provider Mursion to develop and pilot scenarios for the last four years. This year she helped develop Nate, an avatar with autism spectrum disorder, and Harrison, an avatar with a specific learning disability. There are other simulations with “parents.” https://bit.ly/2Z38HQB #mixedreality
